Love in Motion: Verne and Maria’s Fairytale

"Revisiting those memories together was extraordinary. It reminded us what we worked so hard for." Verne

For Verne and Maria, physical therapy wasn’t just about recovery, it was about building a future together.

They first met in the Eliseo Consonus Rehab gym, each on their own healing journeys.

Verne (84), was instantly drawn to Maria’s strength and courage. Maria (79), saw in him a kindness that made her feel safe. What began as a casual connection soon grew into something more. Two years later, surrounded by family, staff, and friends, they were married in that same facility.

Their dreams didn’t stop at the altar. Verne and Maria longed to celebrate their romance with a honeymoon at the Puyallup State Fair….With Verne relying on a wheelchair and Maria still rebuilding her strength, that dream felt overwhelmingly out of reach.

That’s when their Consonus Rehab team stepped in, with special effort from their “angel”, Carson a Physical Therapist at Eliseo. Carson, their therapist, created a plan to make the impossible possible:

  • Optimizing Verne’s wheelchair so it could glide over the fairground’s uneven paths
  • Designing a strength-building program for Maria so she could walk with confidence
  • Encouraging them through each session, reminding them that this wasn’t just therapy—it was preparation for a once-in-a-lifetime memory

When the day finally arrived, their joy was clear. They petted as many sheep and rabbits as possible, shared a sweet slice of shortcake, and soaked up every moment together. “It was like revisiting old places with my now-wife and companion,” Verne said. For Verne and Maria, this wasn’t just a trip to the fair. It was proof that personalized therapy and love can turn dreams into reality.
